“why do people conflate top/bottom and Dom/sub” because we haven’t socially destigmatized kink. that’s literally it.

if you say you’re topping your boyfriend when you push him around in the bedroom you’re being cool and quirky and using slang to describe your antics. if you do the same thing and say you’re domming him you must be a seriously freaky person. that’s why people use top to mean Dom and bottom to mean sub. they know even if we allow the nice clean gays with their fun bedroom terms into our society, we should never ever be like Those People who spend significant amounts of time and energy learning how to have the kind of sex so many of us clumsily imitate in our bedrooms.

“researching kink is forbidden. talking about kink is forbidden. slapping your partner and choking them is normal because I saw it in porn and my buddies say they do it. don’t go to seminars on how to manage the risk of those activities or you’re a sex-obsessed freak. I’m the normal one, the one whose partner chokes me with their belt and doesn’t know what aftercare is. I’m a bottom.”

the problem is that kink activities are socially acceptable and even expected, but having any awareness of the terminology or safe ways to play surrounding them is heavily stigmatized. kink anti-intellectualism is rampant among people of every political orientation because of how badly our society has poisoned us. so we can’t even say Dom or sub to refer to ourselves. it’s a symptom of that problem.

I think the bicycle helmet discourse really just reinforces the idea that people believe that accidents only happen to the stupid and careless, and that people who get hurt somehow deserve it. And since nobody wants to believe themselves to be stupid, or thinks they could be careless or distracted, it’s not necessary to take precautions.

And then they take safety advice as an insult because telling someone to be safe is seen as an accusation of being stupid and irresponsible, and not just a value neutral acknowledgement of statistical inevitably. We see it with masks, and seatbelts, and now bicycle helmets because everyone wants to believe they’re too clever to get hurt, and too lucky to get hurt badly, until suddenly you’re not and you have to resign, in shame, to being one of the people you previously saw as annoying nags, assuming you’re even still alive.

anyway I will always be suspicious of people who tell disabled people to shut up for “activist reasons”. you know

“now’s not the time to talk about eugenics, we can’t give the anti-choice people the fuel” then stop being ableist when you argue for abortions

“now’s not the time to talk about the overlap between disability and queerness, we can’t let people think that queerness is a disease” stop letting conservatives control the narrative and start forming coalitions with your disabled siblings

it’s not progressive if you’re leaving disabled people behind. it’s not good leftism if you’re using ableist rhetoric to justify your positions. seriously

Very much applicable to all the abled leftists who lose their shit when a disabled person doesn’t kiss the boot of an abled worker who refuses us service, treats us like shit or even hate crimes us. <3

We NEED to reevaluate how we view people with “red flags” that don’t actually indicate harm to anyone. Things like “doesn’t like animals,” “doesn’t have pets,” “my pets immediately distrust them, so that means they’re Secretly Evil.”

I have a psychotic disorder. I suffer from flat affect. I have zero control over how I am emoting, and very often my emotional readout is completely blank. A LOT of animals (dogs especially) have exhibited aggression and fear around me ever since this started. (There are only TWO dogs I’ve met in the last five years that didn’t BITE ME.) Dogs are unsettled by me because of a symptom of my psychosis–a condition that is out of my control that IS NOT DANGEROUS and doesn’t harm anyone.

I also have a severe autoimmune disease and severe allergies to basically all animals. Whenever I tell people I can’t come over because they have pets, or I don’t have/want pets of my own, the IMMEDIATE response I always get is “why don’t you like animals?” So I’m always pretty pissed off when I have to say, “I’m severely allergic. Don’t fucking assume I have an undesireable quality just because I’m not a pet owner.”

Another ableist red flag we need to talk about is “has no other friends/all their friends break up with them.” Hi. I’m physically disabled with a digestive disease and a degenerative disease in my spine. That means my dietary restrictions are stupid and I can’t sit/stand/walk for more than 15 minutes without being in pain. Most of the friends I break up with, I do so BECAUSE THEY ARE INCREDIBLY ABLEIST TO ME with no visible potential of changing. From people relentlessly harrassing me about lifestyle changes to not accepting correction or feedback when I tell them “hey, you CAN’T do x because it triggers y condition.” If they argue or blow me off, I’m not their fucking friend!

Tl;dr: Disabled, chronically ill, and people with “scary” mental illnesses are often lumped in with “bad people” for characteristics that hurt no one and aren’t in their control. Stop using “my dog is uncomfortable around them” as a litmus test for everyone you hang out with.

Been trying to think of a way to explain to American audiences why the 9 dash line thing is so important to SEAsians and why it’s justifiable to ban the Barbie movie for it, but the closest explanation I can give is this: imagine if this painting was in the Barbie movie with no explanation and we were all just supposed to accept it without comment

image

I don’t care if people watch the movie, I know everyone was excited for it, me included. But I’d hope in the very least we can tell people why the Vietnam ban was 100% justified. 9 dash line maps are a distillation of over a decade of Chinese imperialist oppression against SEAsian countries. Most of the world doesn’t care, but that’s how it is.

At least have this as a learning experience.

Basically in 2015 international courts ruled against China taking up the majority of the West Philippine / South China sea, since it was maritime territory shared between the different countries. China then ignored the ruling, destroyed the local ecosystem to build an artificial military island, and has been policing it heavily ever since.

It’s like if someone moved into your shared kitchen and threatened to shoot you for trying to get food.

Since then Vietnam has had a hard line stance against them and the Philippines has had to rely on American military power to match threat for threat. We’d love to not have either of these superpower imperialist fucks looming over us but that’s not the world we live in.

Anyway. That’s why. If they remove it from the movie, that’ll be nice, but it’s a bigger statement than just a picture.

forever rolling my eyes at joke posts that focus on the nsfw ban on tumblr solely from a pov of ‘we want to be able to see dicks on demand!!! bring back porn!!!” with no actual meaningful discussion on providing a safe haven for sex workers to once again promote their work and support themselves, especially as the situation becomes more and more dire each day as additional social media sites fall
